Yocan Kodo Pro Battery Review: A Tiny Powerhouse for Vape Carts

For vapers that value their ability to vape discreetly, have digital control options and do not require a lot of complicated setup the Yocan Kodo Pro is a viable option. The Kodo Pro is a compact 510-thread battery featuring a digital screen and adjustable voltage, and it is priced at around $14.99.

The Kodo Pro is intended for vapers looking for a product that combines portability and functionality, but does not require a high-end price tag. I’ve been using it as my everyday driver for a couple of months now to determine whether this little device meets its claims.

Product Intro and Specs

Yocan Kodo Pro is a 510-thread cartridge battery. Or, as many call them, a “box mod.” It is an updated version of the Yocan Kodo. The Kodo Pro is unique compared to other 510 threaded batteries in its class, because it replaces the typical simple LED lighting system with an actual working OLED display.

Specifications for Key Features:

  • Battery: The Kodo Pro features a 400 mAh battery.
  • Charging: The Kodo Pro charges via USB-C (the charger cable is not included).
  • Voltage Adjustment: The Kodo Pro has adjustable voltage, ranging from 1.8V to 4.2V with an adjustment of 0.1V.
  • Display: The Kodo Pro includes a digital OLED screen displaying voltage, puff count, battery level and mode.

Additional Features:

  • 10 second preheat time
  • Puff counter, automatically resets when reaching 9999 puffs
  • Multiple Safety Protections
  • Threading: 510 threading

Size, Look, and Feel

The Kodo Pro’s extreme portability is its biggest asset. Measuring at just under 2 inches in length, the Kodo Pro is nearly as long as a credit card and slightly less than an inch thick. The Kodo Pro weighs almost nothing, as it is made of a zinc alloy. While this keeps the overall price down, the zinc alloy gives off a plastic feel and is not as premium feeling as metal products.

In addition to being available in a variety of colors and finish options including solid colors such as black, white and red as well as vibrant "spatter" designs, the model I tested came in a sleek black. The cartridge attaches directly to the top of the Kodo Pro, sticking out instead of being recessed into the body of the Kodo Pro. The universal design of the Kodo Pro makes sure the device will work with any type of cartridge regardless of the width, but it also means that there is no protection for the glass portion of the cartridge if it were to fall.

There is a small hole located on the side of the Kodo Pro, allowing for a lanyard to attach (lanyard not included). This is a great idea, as it will allow the user to securely store and access the tiny Kodo Pro.

How to Turn On/Off & Basic Operations

The Kodo Pro has a very simple three-button interface along with a display.

  • Power On/Off: Hold the main power button down rapidly for five seconds.
  • Adjust Voltage: Use the + and – buttons on the side to increase/decrease the voltage in .1V increments. The voltage setting will be displayed clearly on the display.
  • Activate Preheat: To activate the ten-second heat cycle at 1.8V to help loosen up thick oils, press the power button twice. Pressing the power button twice again will cancel the heat cycle.
  • Vaping: To vape, simply press and hold the power button while inhaling. There is a fifteen-second delay before the device cuts off to prevent accidental fires.
  • Reset Puff Count: Hold down the power button and the – button at the same time to reset the puff counter.

Device Performance

Where the Kodo Pro really excels for its size, is with its performance. The .1V incremental adjustment is another outstanding feature of the Kodo Pro, offering the ability to tune your sessions precisely. Based on my personal experience and common practices, here is how I find the Kodo Pro performs based on the following ranges:

  • Low (1.8V – 2.4V): Perfect for live resin and rosin. Low voltage preserves delicate flavors and terpenes, producing smooth vapor with minimal visibility.
  • Medium (2.5V – 3.2V): A great middle ground for the majority of distillates. Produces both a good balance of flavor and vapor.
  • High (3.3V – 4.2V): Provides robust effects and dense clouds. Flavor can diminish with higher voltage levels.

The preheat function works extremely well and heats the cartridge quickly enough for a complete first draw. The OLED display is a significant improvement over the typical blinking LED indicator. With the OLED display, there is no confusion, as it clearly shows you what is going on with the device.

Battery Life and Charging

The 400 mAh battery matches perfectly with the Kodo Pro's mission to be compact. For a moderate to light user, taking an occasional hit during the day, a single charge of the Kodo Pro will last through the entire day. However, for a heavy user, they will likely need to recharge the Kodo Pro by late afternoon.

One of the best aspects of the Kodo Pro is the inclusion of a USB-C charging port, which enables faster and easier charging than traditional micro-USB ports. It takes approximately one hour to fully charge the Kodo Pro. Although the Kodo Pro includes a USB-C charging port, the manufacturer does not include a charging cable with the purchase of the Kodo Pro.

What Does the LED Light Mean? Interpreting the Display

The Kodo Pro displays status updates through its OLED display, and does not utilize the standard simple blinking LED lighting system. The OLED display clearly states:

  • “Low Battery” : The battery icon will either be empty or flashing. Recharge the device.
  • “No Atomizer”: The Kodo Pro cannot detect a cartridge. Verify the connections between the cartridge and Kodo Pro, and make sure the threads are clean.
  • “Short Circuit” or “Shorted” : Indicates an electrical fault, which could be caused by a faulty cartridge or dirty connections.
  • “Over Time” : Displays on the screen after the fifteen second continuous firing safety cutoff.

Conclusion

Overall, the Yocan Kodo Pro is an excellent value for those seeking the ultimate combination of precision and miniaturization at an affordable price. With a price of around $15, the Yocan Kodo Pro provides a feature set that greatly exceeds its weight class. It demonstrates that you don’t have to buy a large or high-priced device to get a precise, modern vaping experience.
