Consumers need to make sure they buy from authorized distributors in order to receive the authentic, authorized product.
Size, Look, and Feel
Alto is characterized by a sleek, slender appearance, with a soft-metallic finish. The Alto is small and light enough to fit easily in a pocket. The mouthpiece of the pod is flat and curved slightly. I think this design is far and away the most comfortable I have encountered on any similar vaping product I have tested. However, the pod is secured to the battery by a magnetic force that feels less secure than other magnetic forces. I find that the pod sometimes wiggles slightly. If the device is dropped, I have had the pod pop out of the device.
How to Turn On/Off & Basic Functions
- Power & Activation: The Alto does not have a button to control its power. Instead, it is activated by drawing air into the mouthpiece. This allows the device to automatically turn on and produce vapor as soon as you start inhaling.
- Getting Started: First, you need to completely charge the battery using the included magnetic charger. Once the battery is charged, attach a pod to the magnetic housing of the battery. Once the pod is attached, the device is ready to be used.
- Charging: To charge the battery, simply plug the magnetic charger into the base of the device. Typically, a complete charge from a completely discharged state takes approximately 70 to 80 minutes.
How Does It Hit?
The Alto provides a relatively tight, cigarette-like draw, slightly tighter than some of the competition. The Alto provides a strong and satisfying hit, which produces a noticeable throat hit, particularly with the higher levels of nicotine.
One of the most significant advantages of the Alto is its ability to provide a consistent hit throughout the life of the pod. Although there have been issues reported regarding pod consistency (i.e., some pods have produced a burnt taste, while others have failed to connect properly), customer service is capable of replacing defective pods. Therefore, it would be advisable to retain your receipt in case you need to request replacement of a defective pod.
Are the Flavors Any Good?
As previously mentioned, the current US menu includes only three core flavors:
- Golden Tobacco: A lighter, more traditional cigarette-type flavor, with subtle caramel and vanilla notes. An excellent "all-around" flavor.
- Rich Tobacco: A bolder, more mature tobacco flavor with deeper, richer tobacco notes and undertones of cocoa and nuts. It is my preferred flavor due to its rich characteristics.
- Menthol: A typical menthol with a clear, cold, and refreshing finish. While menthol is a nice refreshing flavor, it lacks any real complexity.
All flavors are quite bold and leave a distinct room note, which could be something you'll want to take into consideration, depending on how important it is for you to avoid lingering aromas in your environment.
How Long Do They Last?
The 350mAh battery should provide a full day of moderate use. When the battery is low, a green LED light will blink ten times.
The length of time that each pod lasts is directly related to your vaping habits. Based on customer reviews and my own usage, a 1.8 mL pod should last several days of normal usage. Users with heavier vaping styles may exhaust a pod sooner than users with lighter vaping styles. Each pod is a disposable item, and cannot be refilled.
Vuse Alto LED Light Meaning
The Alto uses a basic LED light indication system to communicate its status.
- During Normal Usage: During normal usage, the LED light remains lit whenever you inhale.
- Low Battery: Ten blinks of the LED indicates extremely low battery.
- Charging: The LED light glows when the device is being charged and goes dark once the battery is fully charged.
Overall Summary
The Alto is a reliable, no-frills vaping product suitable for adult smokers transitioning from cigarettes who prefer simplicity and a strong nicotine hit, rather than a large number of flavors. The biggest downside of the Alto is the unreliability of the pods, which can be frustrating.
I conditionally recommend the Vuse Alto. Overall, the Alto performs well when functioning properly; however, you need to be prepared to deal with the possibility of receiving an occasional defective pod. Additionally, you should only purchase from vendors who have good customer support policies.
