The NJOY ACE: A Review of an Authorized Vape Pod System

While the NJOY ACE is unique in the U.S. pod-based vaping space as one of the few products that holds FDA marketing authorization, I have had a mixed experience of appreciation for its design and frustration with the numerous quality-related issues that have been reported consistently by users. This review examines the key aspects of the NJOY ACE, including its specs, its overall performance and how the device fits into today’s regulatory climate.

Product Intro and Specs

The NJOY ACE is a pod-based closed system produced by NJOY, an American vape manufacturer established in 2006, and subsequently purchased in 2023 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altria Group, Inc., which is an American multinational consumer goods corporation. The ACE is a simple, rechargeable battery that comes with prefilled, non-refillable pods.

Technical specifications of the NJOY ACE include:

  • Pod Capacity: 1.9 milliliters of e-liquid.
  • Nicotine: Utilizes nicotine salts; in the form of two concentrations – 2.4 percent (24mg) and 5.0 percent (50mg) by weight for the pods.
  • Battery: Rechargeable battery integrated within the device; utilizing micro-USB for recharging.
  • Puff Count: Estimated number of puffs per pod is approximately 325, which NJOY states is equivalent to a single pack of regular cigarettes.

Note: There is an additional consideration for consumers regarding the ongoing patent litigation that affects the product. By order of the International Trade Commission (ITC), NJOY has been unable to import, sell, market, distribute, or promote NJOY ACE devices and pods in the United States since March 31, 2025. As such, the product is currently unavailable in the U.S.

Size, Look, and Feel

One of the NJOY ACE's greatest advantages is its design. At 3.5 inches by 1.1 inches by 0.5 inches, the ACE is small and sleek. It weighs 2.2 ounces and feels substantial and unobtrusive in the hand, fitting nicely into pockets. The surface of the ACE is smooth and the minimalistic style of the ACE keeps it from having the flashy look of many other products. The ACE utilizes a magnetic connection between the device and the pods allowing the pods to attach in both orientations, creating a highly user-friendly interface.

How to Use & Turning On/Off & Basic Use

The ACE was created to provide the user with the simplest possible experience and does so by using no buttons for activation or firing.

  • To Operate: To operate simply inhale on the mouthpiece of the pod and the device will automatically engage, signaled by a white LED light at the bottom.
  • To Charge: Plug the micro-USB cable provided with the device into the charging port located at the bottom of the device. The white LED light will glow during the charging process and will go dark once fully charged.
  • Battery Indication: If the device is completely discharged, the LED light will blink ten times if you attempt to draw.

Important Tip: According to multiple forum posts, it is suggested to take the pod off prior to recharging the device. There are instances where charging the device with the pod attached can result in a burned taste in the coil.

How Does It Hit?

The vaping experience of the ACE is characterized by a narrow, cigarette-like draw that is both smooth and satisfying. The use of nicotine salts produces a strong nicotine hit without too much harshness, particularly at the 5.0% concentration. The throat hit is notable and similar to a traditional cigarette, which may appeal to those who smoked previously and are now looking for something with a familiar feeling.

My experience and many reports from users have shown that there is considerable variability in the performance of the pods. While pods that function properly produce rich and flavorful vapor, many pods develop problems such as leaking, spitting liquid, or tasting of a burn early, sometimes right from the first pull. These problems greatly reduce what would otherwise be a satisfactory hit.

What Are the Best Flavors?

Since the NJOY ACE is an FDA-approved product, the ACE has limited options for flavorings - primarily tobacco and menthol based flavors. Other fruit-flavored pods, including Blueberry and Watermelon Twist have been submitted for review but have not yet received FDA approval to be sold.

Currently, the following authorized flavors exist:

Flavor Nicotine Strengths Description & Notes
Classic Tobacco 2.4%, 5.0% A smooth, aromatic tobacco with oaky and nutty notes. Designed to mimic the scent of fresh cigarettes.
Rich Tobacco 5.0% A bolder, sweeter profile reminiscent of pipe tobacco. Offers a deeper, earthier flavor.
Menthol 2.4%, 5.0% A crisp, cooling menthol with smooth mint undertones. The first non-tobacco flavor to receive FDA marketing authorization.

In my experience and from comments from other users, Menthol seems to be the most praised flavor for retaining its character throughout the life of the pod, while the tobacco flavors appear to be more susceptible to degradation or a bad taste. Users on forums have also mentioned a change in the manufacturing of menthol pods (with "FEELM" technology), which they feel negatively affected the taste of the pods.

Battery Performance and Charging

According to NJOY, the battery should last the entire day, and takes approximately 1.2 hours to recharge from empty. In my experience, I felt this to be generally true for average usage. The battery performs as intended, lasting the duration of a full pod, which is the intended purpose of the ACE.

The biggest problem with the battery performance is its long-term dependability, not its ability to last a day. A frequent topic in customer reviews is devices that lose their ability to hold a charge after a few weeks or months, with users stating that the device blinks and does not fire even after being plugged in. Additionally, the micro-USB charging port of the ACE appears to be an older technology than the more prevalent USB-C technology.

The NJOY ACE LED Light Meaning

The white LED light at the base of the ACE device serves as a simple but effective method to communicate the status of the device.

  • Solid White Light (when vaping): The ACE is activated and working.
  • Solid White Light (when charging): The ACE is being charged.
  • LED Light goes Dark: The ACE is fully charged.
  • White Light Blanks 10 Times: The ACE's battery is low and requires recharging.

Conclusion

On the positive side of things, the ACE has a great deal going for it: it has FDA approval that represents a scientifically reviewed dossier, it has a sleek and easy-to-use design, and when operating correctly, delivers a very enjoyable and effective alternative to smoking.

Unfortunately, its shortcomings cannot be overlooked. The wide-spread quality control issues associated with the pods (leakage, burning), and failure of the battery create a poor user experience and a loss of value for the user. Furthermore, the import ban placed upon the product by the ITC has severely impacted its availability in the U.S. since March 2025, presenting an additional and significant impediment to accessing the product.

Although the NJOY ACE has a solid basis as a transition tool for adult smokers wishing to transition away from smoking, I do not whole-heartedly endorse the product due to the likelihood of experiencing pods that fail to meet expectations. Therefore, if you decide to purchase the ACE, it is crucial to buy from a merchant that has a good return policy. Ultimately, the ACE is a product that has gained FDA approval, but has failed to deliver the level of dependability that consumers expect.
