Getting into dabbing is kind of like walking into a professional kitchen without any recipes. You've got your torch, your rig, your nail – but what percentage of that glistening concentrate can you really use? And, depending on the amount you dabble with, the difference between a creative-boosting micro-dose and a "I'm stuck to the couch" large dose can depend on whether you used a grain or two of rice or a handful.

This guide is more than a chart -- it's a philosophy. It's about treating modern concentrates with the respect they deserve and listening to your own body. So, let's break it down — from hard data to the subtle nuances of the perfect dab.
The Golden Rule: Start Small, Take Your Time (Seriously)
Before we get into sizes, we need to set the rules of dabbing: you can always take more, but you can never take less.
In a 2020 study in JAMA Psychiatry researchers found that modern concentrates typically have over 80% THC, with many distillates reaching 99% THC. With those numbers, one gram of concentrate could contain over 800mg of THC. To give you an idea, most "standard doses" in edibles are around 10mg of THC. The potency gap between the two methods is huge.
I treat every new batch of concentrate like I am meeting a new person. I do not assume I understand how strong/what the effects will be of a new batch of concentrate until I spend some time with it. Following this approach has helped me avoid numerous overpowering experiences.
The Dab Size Chart: A Visual & Measurable Guide
Use this chart as your starting point. The "mg of THC" estimates are based on average potency for each concentrate type.
| Dab Size | Visual Comparison | Approx. Weight | Approx. THC (for ~80% THC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microdose | 1-2 grains of rice / crumb | 0.01g - 0.02g | 8mg - 16mg |
| Low Dose | Small pea / 3-4 grains of rice | 0.03g - 0.05g | 24mg - 40mg |
| Medium Dose | Large pea / small dab tool scoop | 0.06g - 0.1g | 48mg - 80mg |
| Large Dose | Full dab tool scoop / small grape | 0.15g+ | 120mg+ |
Nuance by Concentrate Type: It's Not Just About Size
Experience plays a large role in dabbing. The consistency of a concentrate and its terpene profile greatly affect how to properly dab.
1. Shatter & Crumble
These are usually the most user-friendly to use for newbies. Shatter is rigid and can be broken off, while crumble is, well, crumbly. These concentrates tend to be less sticky than other types, making them easier to measure or visually estimate.
Because shatter and crumble are so stable, it's very easy to take more than you planned to. Use the "one grain of rice" rule as strictly as possible when using these concentrates. In addition to being very THC-based, these concentrates are also very "potent" and therefore a little goes a long way.
2. Badder, Budder, & Live Resin/Sauce
This is where flavor shines through. Wet and terpene rich, I personally love these concentrates. However, their saucy consistency can make dosing difficult. What appears to be a "pea sized" dab of badder can easily turn out to be a "grape sized" dab.
Use a cold tool. When dipping your dab tool into the jar, dip it in quickly; a cold tool will take up less of the product than a warm tool. High terpene content results in a stronger, full spectrum effect. Depending on the type, you may require slightly less of these concentrates than shatter for the same level of relief.
3. Rosin (The Artisanal Option)
As a solventless extract, rosin provides a clean and unadulterated representation of the plant. Potency and flavor can vary depending on quality, but the consistency can be anything from buttery to sappy.
Be respectful of high quality rosin. Its clean high can be deceiving; the effects are full-bodied and powerful. I normally microdose rosin (using the "grain of rice" size) due to the fact that the flavor and effects are so robust that using a larger dose would be unnecessary and overwhelming.
4. Diamonds & Isolate
Pure potency. THCa diamonds can be 99%+ pure THCA, converting to THC upon heating. Isolate is pure crystalline form.
This is not a good place to start dabbing. Using pure diamonds is similar to drinking everclear after only drinking beer. If you decide to use diamonds, begin with a piece of diamond the size of a grain of sand. You can always add a small dab of sauce or badder to top your diamonds for terpens to modify the high and provide flavor (known as "tipping" your diamonds).
The Tools & Techniques for Consistent Dosing
- The Dab Tool: Your Best Friend. Use the end of the tool to scoop a consistent amount. Many dab tools include a small spoon or flat head to allow for precise control of your dosage.
- Milligram Scale ($20-30): The ultimate tool for precision. If you are medicating for a particular condition or are serious about consistently using your concentrates, a milligram scale is the only substitute.
- "Cold Start" Technique: My preferred method for flavor and control. Place your dab in a cold banger and heat it until the concentrate begins to vaporize. This helps prevent burning your valuable terpenes and makes it easier to determine when you have taken enough vapor, since you can simply cease heating once you produce a satisfactory cloud.
Final Words of Wisdom from the Other Side
- Your Tolerance Will Rise Quickly: Consuming large quantities of concentrates on a daily basis will result in rapid escalation of your tolerance. Regular use of micro-doses and periodic "T-breaks" are necessary for long term appreciation/enjoyment/effectiveness of your concentrates.
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Dabbing can be dehydrating at times and may even induce coughing fits. Keep a cold glass of water handy. It is a small tip that makes dabbing an enjoyable experience.
- Set and Setting Matter: Do not consume a large quantity of concentrates prior to a job interview or a stressful work call. Match your dosage to your intent. A micro-dose can complement a peaceful stroll, while a med dose is ideal for getting comfortable on the couch to watch a movie.
Dabbing is a journey of discovery, not a competition for the largest cloud. By beginning with smaller amounts, demonstrating respect for your materials, and paying attention to your body's signals, you will unlock the real benefits of cannabis concentrates: exceptional flavor, accurate effects, and a unique, personal experience. Now, go slow, and go low. Your future self will thank you.
