Can You Eat Live Resin From a Cart?: Is It Safe or Effective?

I've experienced the same curiosity from new enthusiasts to the concentration industry, and that's: "Can I just take the live resin from inside a vape cart and eat it?" This appears to be a logical question. Live resin is a very flavorful and potent cannabis concentrate and we eat THC infused products all the time. So, why can't we just cut to the chase and just consume the contents of the vape cart?

Being immersed in this community and understanding the nuances of the question, I can tell you that the answer is more complex than a simple "yes" or "no," and relies upon the difference between a raw cannabis extract and a bioavailable edible.

What Exactly is Live Resin in a Cart?

To address the underlying question, let me clarify what you are really getting inside that cartridge. Live resin is a wonderful product. I still remember trying some from a company such as Raw Garden or Papa's Herb; their terpene profiles were so fresh and vibrant, unlike any other concentrate I've ever tried. The reason for this is that the plant material is flash-frozen immediately post-harvest and preserves the delicate aromatic compounds which provide the plant's unique odor and flavor.

Live resin in a jar and live resin in a cartridge are not the same. Since the live resin needs to be thinned to a point where it can be atomized by the cartridge's heating element, the viscosity of the live resin is altered by the extractors in one of two manners: Some extractors gently heat and whip the resin to a consistent "badder"-type product that works well in advance carts. Many others use a thinning agent. The most commonly used thinning agent is cannabis derived terpenes, however many extractors use Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG).

The Problems With Consuming Live Resin From a Cart

Can the live resin from a cart be processed by your body if you consume it orally? No, and it is not just that it doesn't work-it can also be unpleasant, and dangerous. Now, let us discuss the major issues with the question.

The Decarboxylation Issue

Decarboxylation is the process that transforms Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA) into the psychoactive compound Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THCA is present in fresh frozen plant material, and therefore the live resin from a cart. For the conversion to occur, the THCA must be exposed to heat.

When you vape a cart, the coil heats the oil instantly activating it. When you consume the oil raw, this does not happen. Therefore, the THCA in the live resin is primarily consumed. Your body cannot convert THCA to THC. Therefore, you could consume a large quantity of potential potency and experience almost no psychoactivity. That is a huge waste of a premium product.

Safety and Purity Issues

In addition to ineffectiveness, there are serious concerns regarding the purity of the product and the chemicals involved in the manufacture of the product.

Not all cartridges are 100% live resin. In fact, many contain PG, VG or other unknown chemicals used to thin the live resin. When you ingest these chemicals in the form of a concentrated oil, they are not considered safe for oral consumption.

Another concern of mine is the introduction of contaminants via the hardware. I have spent a lot of time taking apart older carts. When attempting to access the oil, the majority of the time requires the use of metal tools that can scrape the walls of the cart or the coil. Any contaminates introduced via the tools will be introduced into the concentrate you plan to consume. There is no reason to do this.

A Very Unpleasant Experience

From a purely experiential perspective, I do not think it is worth it. Live resin is notorious for being very sticky and sappy. Getting it out of the cart can be a mess, and a difficult task. Additionally, the intense flavor profile in the vaporization application (usually extremely piney) can be overwhelming and harsh on your taste buds when tasting it raw and concentrated. It's much more likely to cause a gag reflex than a euphoric high.

How To Use Your Cart’s Oil In An Effective And Safe Manner

If you have a vape cart that is clogged, broken, or running low on oil and still want to save what is left, there is a safe and effective way to do this. This process fixes the issue of decarboxylation and turns the oil into a viable edible.

Step 1: Extract The Oil Safely

Remove the mouth piece from the cart. If necessary, remove the mouthpiece with pliers and a cloth to prevent scratching the metal. After removing the mouth piece, use a tooth pick, dab tool or small syringe to slowly remove or draw the remaining oil from the cart. Do not scrape the sides or coils harshly while extracting the oil. Remove the remaining oil and place it in a small, oven-safe container such as a ramekin or dab jar.

Step 2: The Essential Decarboxylation Process

This step cannot be skipped. Insert your oven-safe container containing the extracted oil into a preheated oven set to 220-245°F (105-120°C). Allow the oil to bake for 20-30 minutes. You will know the oil is activating when you observe tiny bubbles rising from the bottom of the oil and then stop. The tiny bubbles are the result of CO2 releasing as the THCA converts to THC. Once the bubbling has slowed down considerably, your oil is now activated.

Step 3: Infuse and Consume

Your cannabis oil is now decarbed and ready to ingest. One of the simplest ways to ingest decarbed cannabis oil is to mix it with a fat-based carrier. I have had good results mixing the warm oil directly into a spoonful of hot coconut oil, melted butter, or even a cup of full-fat yogurt. The fat improves the absorption rate of the THC in your body and allows it to be processed by your body efficiently. Mix it well into your food or beverage and eat/drink it.

The hardest part of making your own edibles from a cart is determining how many milligrams of THC are present per dose. Since dosing from home-made edibles from a cart is very inaccurate, if you know the total potency of your cart (for example, 1 gram of oil at 80% THC = 800 mg THC) and can approximate how much oil you were able to extract (i.e. 25%, therefore ~200 mg THC), you can calculate the amount of THC present in your dose. Always err on the side of caution when consuming unknown amounts of THC. Begin with a minimal dose — a single grain of rice-sized dose — and wait at least 2 hours before deciding to take another dose.

Final Verdict: Vape It – Don’t Eat It

While the creativity of cannabis users is wonderful, eating live resin directly from a cart is both inefficient and risky. The science behind decarboxylation clearly shows that without heat activation, you’re going to miss out on the main effects you are looking for. Eating live resin also poses a risk of consuming unwanted additives or metal fragments from the cart itself.

If you plan to use the oil orally, the only safe and effective route is to safely extract the oil and complete a proper decarboxylation process prior to incorporating the oil into a fat. Honestly though? These carts are designed to vaporize oil. You will get the best taste, the most accurate dose control, and the safest vaping experience by using these carts as they were originally designed. Leave the edible experimentation to concentrates and infusions that have been properly decarbed and created from the ground-up.
